Call the Midwife Wiki

Ameera Khatun appeared in S04E05 of Call the Midwife. She is a heavily pregnant Sylheti woman who caught the eye of Nurse Barbara Gilbert who spotted her outside the school gates and noticed she seemed to be in pain. Ameera doesn't speak a word of English, although her young son Faruk is fluent in the language and helps Barbara to communicate. She is played by British-Indian actress Manjinder Virk.

After a brief glimpse of her at the start of the episode, Ameera Khatun is spotted outside the school gates by Nurse Barbara Gilbert who notices she is heavily pregnant and appears to be in a great deal of discomfort and goes over and asks her if she's alright. Ameera's young son, Faruk, comes up and explains to Barbara that his mother doesn't speak English. With Faruk acting as a translator, Barbara is able to communicate with Ameera who says she's fine, but Faruk then mentions his mother is having trouble walking, but the school bell then sounds and the boy dashes off inside. Barbara later visits the school and learns Ameera's address and goes to see her after school where with Faruk translating, Barbara tells her that they'll help her with everything.

Towards the end of the episode Ameera suddenly falls ill, forcing Faruk to seek help from Nonnatus House. Barbara, accompanied by Sister Mary Cynthia, finds Ameera propped up against the wall struggling to breathe. She suddenly starts to cough violently and Barbara holds her handkerchief under Ameera's chin. She coughs up blood and Barbara notices it smells very bad and realises Ameera is suffering from diphtheria, so Sister Mary Cynthia calls an ambulance, but after twenty minutes it hasn't arrived, and with Ameera's breathing becoming increasingly laboured, Sister Mary Cynthia asks Dr. Turner for help. The GP rushes to the scene and has to perform an emergency tracheotomy on Ameera which saves her life. At the end of the episode, she is shown to have given birth to a healthy baby girl.
