Anita Dobson, Lady May (born 29 April 1949) is an English actress who portrayed the role of Mabel Tillerson in the 2017 Christmas Special of Call the Midwife.

Early Life[]

Anita Dobson was born on 29 April 1949 in Stepney, London, England. She is the daughter of Alfred William Dobson, a cutter in a dress factory and Amy Amelia Dobson, a seamstress. She has one younger sister, Gillian Dobson, an actress. She left school at 16 and had a string of jobs including insurance clerk, and model for a clothes chain. When young she'd taught singing and tap dancing and joined an amateur drama group. When she was 20 she won a grant for a drama school which lasted 3 years and then spent the next 13 years touring around the country in repertory companies.

Career[]

Her other television credits include The Bill, Split Ends, and popular soap opera EastEnders in which she played her most famous role, pub landlady Angie Watts. One of her most notable storylines saw Angie fake a terminal illness in a desperate bid to hold on to he adulterous husband, "Dirty" Den Watts. Dobson appeared in EastEnders from it's first episode in 1985 until she left the show in 1988. The door was left open for Dobson in the event that she decided to return to the show, but she never did, and her character was ultimately killed off off-screen in 2002.

In 1986, Dobson recorded Anyone Can Fall in Love (the EastEnders theme tune) which reached No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart.

Personal Life[]

Anita met musician Sir Brian May, guitarist of rock band Queen in 1986. They married in 2000. Dobson is the stepmother of Brian May three children from his previous marriage with Christine Mullen.
