Glasshouse Village is a community that people with disabilities go to live and work at, it was a pioneering idea as at the time the series was set there were only a handful of places like it in the whole UK, but Dr Turner was sure there would be more.

Overview[]

Glasshouse village trust is located in the countryside amongst green fields, people with special needs went to live there. There were trained staff to look after them and supervise them in their jobs, they worked and earned money and were able to live freely and live as normal a life as was possible. The only part of the village seen was the greenhouse which was were Reggie Jackson began working when he moved in as he was a gardener, Reggie recently lost his mother Ivy and was living with Cousin Fred and his wife Violet and he became like a son to them but they knew it could not be a long term solution so Shelagh Turner found the village which was in the newspapers for celebrating its second year open. Reggie thrived there and made friends like his girlfriend Jane. The only other time the village was physically seen was in Series 8 when Reggie telephoned Violet to congratulate her on winning her place in the local council, Reggie lived there most of the year but did make visits to Fred and Violet in Poplar at points in the year like Christmas and summertime. The village sometimes did classes like independence training, learning the value of money and shopping which led to Reggie buying presents for Violet that weren’t very good. The model of the village would seem to be the successor to institutions like St Gideons home of which it is markedly different, it allowed Reggie to make friends and live a normal life.
