The prison interior

The prison was first seen in Series 3 when the midwives who normally attend to the expectant mothers are hit with influenza so Sister Julienne and Trixie Franklin are sent instead. The prison itself is a very typical prison, very austere, rough with cells for inmates all around, it also has a sick room and a room for inmates to meet friends and family. When they arrive they find three patients, one postnatal one and two expectant mothers. Sister Julienne helps this mother Stella Crangle prove herself as a mother by finding her a job at a hospital allowing her to keep her baby son Peter (named after Peter Pan, one of the first books Stella learned to read). The name Holloway was mentioned from time to time from then on, another expectant mother Roseanne Dawley did time in Holloway for prostitution in the past. The next time Holloway has a major role is when grandmother of midwife Valerie Dyer, Elsie Dyer is found guilty of performing illegal abortions and is sentenced to six years in prison but she only ends up serving one of those years as in Series 9 Valerie visits her and finds her unable to swallow the cakes she brought her. In the next episode Elsie was sent to the sick room were she looks very ill, Elsie is later diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and is released from prison so she could die at home. Holloway returns in the Series 12 Christmas Special briefly when expectant mother Cindy Dalvert is released early because of good behaviour, after a very hard time her baby daughter is delivered by Nurse Phyllis Crane and Miss Higgins is able to find her a place at a hostel giving her a brighter future.
