Jack Ashton (born Jack Lewis; 19 November 1986) is an English actor who portrayed the role of Reverend Tom Hereward in Call the Midwife.

Early Life[]

Jack Lewis was born on 19 November 1986 in Clifton, Bristol, England. His father was a sculptor and artist, while his mother worked in education. He has two sisters, his family lived briefly at Burnham-on-Sea, but settled in Bedminster, Bristol. He left Bedminster Down School at 16, and studied for a BTEC in performing arts at Filton College. He then attended the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in London.

Career[]

A long-time fan of Bristol City football club, he chose his stage name as a tribute to Ashton Gate stadium.

In 2007, Ashton appeared in an episode of the series Silent Witness.

In 2009, Ashton performed in a Donmar Warehouse production of A Streetcar Named Desire as the dead husband of Blanche Dubois, played by Rachel Weisz.

In 2014, Aston joined the cast of popular period drama Call the Midwife where he portrayed the role of Reverend Tom Hereward until March 2018, when he decided to leave the show.

In 2017, Ashton played the lead role in a film entitled Instrument of War, based on the true story of Clair Cline.

In 2018, he starred in a UK tour of Strangers on a Train, an adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel.

In 2023, Ashton appeared in the BBC series Waterloo Road where he portrayed the role of Lenny Sampson.

In 2023, Ashton joined the cast of The Archers, playing the role of Harry Chilcott.

Personal Life[]

In April 2016, he began dating his Call the Midwife co-star, Helen George when they went to South Africa to film the show's Christmas special. In September 2017, George gave birth to the couple's first child, a girl, whom they called Wren Ivy Ashton. In November 2021, George gave birth to the couple's second child, a girl, whom they called Lark Ashton. In July 2023, George announced that they had split.
