Mr Tunnocks was the intended adoptive father of May Tang who came to England as part of the Hong Kong adoption project where Chinese orphans were adopted by British families. Mr Tunnocks worked as an accountant and his family was considered wonderful, his daughter who would have been May's adoptive sister even had a pony. But around Christmas when Mr Tunnocks and his wife were supposed to go to the Mother House in Chichester they failed to appear. The reason for this, the nuns found out was that Mr Tunnocks had been diagnosed with tuberculosis and 12 months in a sanitorium was considered the best treatment, while he was away Mrs Tunnocks did not feel able to proceed with the adoption so it was possible that May need to spend a year in the orphanage, something that would be bad as May wasn't suited to residential care so it was decided the Turner family would foster May for that year. Mr Tunnocks got better and May was moved to what was intended to be her permanent family until Mr Tunnocks had a relapse and the Tunnocks decided they could not go ahead with the adoption so she went back to the Turners.
