The Seaman's Mission is a local sailors shelter with a branch house located in Poplar; the midwives do not often go there as most of their work is women centric but that doesn’t mean cases haven’t led them there.

Overview[]

The seaman's mission is a charity shelter serving sailors of all ranks and giving them a place to stay for a time if they have no were else to go, they are more often referred to as “doss houses” and many men are in and out of them all of their lives, the one in Poplar was founded in 1843. It is not very far from Nonnatus House, when Sister Ursula briefly took charge of Nonnatus House in Series 6 she decided to do away with the Nonnatus television set which was an unpopular decision. She refused to tell her staff where she sent it but told them it was in a place it was needed, Sister Monica Joan was the most affected by its absence and the elderly nun began wandering around Poplar, her fellow sisters were worried about her until Sister Julienne found out she was watching the old Nonnatus television. As the seaman's mission was a men’s shelter they gave the sister a bench and positioned the television to line up with the window so she could still watch her favourite shows. The television remained with the sailors until the 2017 Christmas special where Sister Julienne explains they received a superior model and so Sister Julienne reclaimed it. The next episode it appears in is S07 E05 in which Nigerian sailor Ade Babayaro is chased from his ship and stays there, he remains there until he is chased out again as everyone believed he was suffering from smallpox but in fact he had leprosy and was able to be treated for his illness.
