S01E03 is the third episode of Series 1 and the third episode overall of Call the Midwife. It originally aired on 29 January 2012 in the UK and 14 October 2012 in the USA.
Overview[]
Jenny befriends an old soldier named Joe, and is disturbed by his living conditions. She is also visited by a man from her past, while Trixie and Cynthia have a sensitive case to deal with, and Chummy is asked on a date.
Plot[]
Jenny is assigned to an older man named Joe Collett, who suffers from ulcers on his legs and requires dressing changes thrice weekly. Before she departs, Sister Julienne describes him as an “interesting old man” in her experience, and tells Jenny to enjoy herself
Sister Evangelina and Chummy depart on bike, and almost immediately, Chummy nearly rides her bike into Constable Peter Noakes and his companion. Chummy immediately apologizes, and Peter dismisses it as “no harm done” and jokingly calls her “something of a menace on [her bike].” Chummy introduces him to Sister Evangelina, who replies that Chummy is “a menace, no matter how she conveys herself.” An awkward, smitten exchange occurs between Chummy and Peter, leading Sister Evangelina to quip how the exchange made her more thankful than ever that she chose to become a nun.
Jenny arrives at Joe’s apartment, finding it in a state of apparent disorganization and filth. She begins with treatment, and Joe offers her a cup of tea, only for her to see the cup is filthy and the tea is unappetizing and request a cold drink. He offers her alcohol, but she refuses as she’s on duty. He explains he got the ulcered wounds from the war at 17, and later explains his sons with his beloved wife, Sally, were killed in the Great War, and Sally herself lost to a firebomb during the Blitz. Jenny offers condolences, and tells her not to be sorry because “[he] loved [them], and [they] loved [me].” Jenny, seeing he was lonely, offered to come back later that evening to share a drink, and Joe gleefully agreed.
Ted and Winnie Lawson report to the clinic after discovering a pregnancy same day. Winnie is told she’s 36 weeks along and due on a month. The news appears to distress her, and Tricia asks if she’s okay. She dismisses her behavior as shock due to her age and disbelief that she was pregnant.
Jenny returns to Joe’s house for that drink, and he expresses that simply having a warm bed and enough to eat was a luxury for him. He mentions he and his wife met at 16, but knew they were the one for each other, and that he survived the war knowing that she was home waiting for him. Jenny goes to fetch biscuits on the counter, but lifting the plate reveals a swath of insects beneath it, prompting Jenny to exit swiftly.
Trixie goes to drop off a delivery pack at the Lawson household, and asks Winnie if she has any questions. Winnie declines, thanking Trixie for dropping off the package, and mentions Ted would be full of questions as this is his first child, but is currently out. Winnie begins to discuss how they met, mentioning her first husband walked out and never returned, leaving her alone with 3 children. She took a job in a paper shop, where Ted would stare at a chocolate bar and leave. When asked, he explained it was a favorite of his late wife, and they began talking more often, leading to a date to the pictures, and marriage a year later. She also confesses she did not originally marry Ted for love, but for stability and later fell in love with him, and sobs as she prepares to tell Trixie something. Ted bustles in before she can speak, holding an armful of labor and delivery books. Trixie dismisses herself, joking that he may know more about midwifery than herself when he’s done reading.
