Sister Hildegard O.S.R.N was a nun who was the first of the Sisters of St Raymond Nonnatus to come to Poplar to begin a mission serving the pregnant women of the East End of London that carried on a century later. She arrived in Poplar in 1867 at a time when it was a particularly rough area and no free health care was provided, according to Sister Mary Cynthia, Sister Hildegard was greatly inspired by Saint Hildegard of Bingen to the point where she took her name. Years after her death a painting was displayed at Nonnatus House of her and she was commemorated every year in a religious service so she would be remembered.
